In this 4 part blog series, you will find 4 weekly posts that help you prepare for baby. For our third post, we talk about professional support.

Have you or your partner thought about who would support you during labour, birth and the postpartum period?

Many couples don’t realize how important it is to have support during these times. In this post we’re talking more than help from family or friends, we’re talking about professional support from people like birth doulas, postpartum doulas, lactation consultants, placenta encapsulation specialists.

 Birth Doulas

A birth doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, educational and physical support to a woman and her partner during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. A doula is there for you when you have questions or concerns regarding your pregnancy and provides you with unbiased, non-judgmental information. A doula also provides you and your partner with emotional and continuous support during labour and birth. Unlike midwives or doctors, a doula is not trained in the medical aspects of birth such as delivering a baby. Studies have shown that people who have used doula support for their births are much more satisfied with their birthing experience.

The birth doulas at Elm City Doulas are all professionally trained to give you AND your partner the support you desire during your pregnancy and birth. We work in teams of two to ensure that you will never be without support. Fredericton Maternity doulas are also trained to work cohesively with your partner to allow them to be involved in the birthing process as much as they desire to be. A doula’s job is not to take over for the partner but instead work with them to help give you the support you want and need. Our doulas are available to be contacted from the moment of hire should you have any questions or concerns.

Postpartum Doulas

Many hear the word postpartum and immediately think depression. Postpartum is actually the period of time that comes after the baby is born. The role of a postpartum doula is to help with recovery from birth, bonding with your newest family member and relaxation. Wouldn’t it be lovely if you could just escape to have an afternoon nap and wake up to find your dishes have been done, the baby’s laundry has been folded and there is a nutritious snack waiting for you in the kitchen. Sounds like a dream doesn’t it? It doesn’t have to be. A postpartum doula is also a trained professional who provides service that doesn’t come with opinions or judgments, instead, she supports your parenting choices and follows your wishes.

Fredericton Maternity also offers professional postpartum doulas that are able to come into your home for a day shift, evening shift or overnight shifts.

Lactation Consultant

Are you planning to breastfeed? Do you know where you can turn if you need assistance? If you do not have a postpartum doula that is assisting you with nursing, the lactation consultants at the Mother / Baby clinic in Fredericton are the ladies to call. They will assist you with all of your breastfeeding concerns.

Placenta Encapsulation Specialist

Are you considering having your placenta encapsulated? One of the top things to consider when picking someone to perform this service is safety. You want someone who is trained to perform this service and has all the appropriate certificates such as blood borne pathogens and food safety/handling. You only get one shot of encapsulating your placenta and you want to make sure it’s done correctly and in the safest way possible. If you are considering this service, you want to make sure you book it well in advance to make sure you have a spot on the calendar. A placenta specialist can also provide tinctures, placenta prints, and cord keepsakes. Click here to read more about why someone would want to consume their placenta.

Elm City Doulas offers placenta encapsulation as well as other placenta services with a professionally trained and certified placenta specialist.

We want you and your partner to have the best experience possible. If you would like to book a complimentary consultation with a doula team, please contact us today.
