Being a chiropractor (and currently 33 weeks pregnant at that), I couldn’t have attempted to write on a more appropriate topic than this one on Chiropractic Care and Pregnancy for my first blog.
Before I dive into some points, let me give you a bit of my background. I have been a Chiropractor for 9 years. I have had the pleasure of working in several very different clinics, which has been a great learning and growing experience for me. I have also owned two clinics myself, one in Portland Maine, and now currently one in my hometown of Fredericton, NB called Fredericton’s Health Source.
I want to try and take a different approach with this blog. Being a chiropractor, it is impossible not to write to you from my “chiropractic heart” and provide education on why it’s important to get adjusted while being pregnant. Chiropractic care is my passion, however during my pregnancy, I have a found another passion: my “maternal heart.” This is the part of my heart that I want to shine the brightest to you in this blog.
There are endless articles that you can read on the benefits of chiropractic care, and you should. The research and overwhelming support on the benefits, to not only the mom but the baby as well, are endless. It’s amazing! Let me try and name the top 10 benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy before I move on…Chiropractic care during pregnancy; maintains a healthier pregnancy, controls nausea, reduces time of labor and delivery, relieves back pain and joint pain, regulates hormonal changes, regulates sleep, can prevent c-section births, promotes optimal fetal positioning (Webster’s Technique, which can actually turn a breached baby), decreases post-partum, increases recovery time and corrects pelvic misalignment. I also make sure to take my vitamins. Every. Single. Day. Vitamin D, Omega 3 and a Probiotic. The essentials for optimal growth and development for the mom and baby (which could be a whole other blog in itself!).
The role of a mom is so vital to the life her child. We want to create a proper environment for our baby to grow and develop. Think of all the time we spend preparing for the arrival of our precious bundle. We stand over that little stick for what seems like hours in hopes of seeing even the ever so faintest line. Once that stick reveals its secret and after the shock wears off, we immediately go into prep mode. Who will they look like, boy or girl, room colours, furniture, themes, etc; but how much time do we spend taking care of their first home. The home where their existence began, the mother’s womb.
Mama’s, we’re natural nurturers. To nurture means “to care for and encourage the growth and development of someone.” This starts in the womb. Knowing and experiencing the benefits of chiropractic care both as the provider and as a patient, I firmly believe — beyond a shadow of a doubt — chiropractic care is the best way to nurture yourself and your baby in the first stages of their life. I was getting adjusted 1 time every 2 weeks in my first and second trimester. Now that I am in my third trimester I get adjusted by my chiropractor 1 time every week (and sometimes 2 since I’m on my feet all day providing treatments for my patients). The point is, everyone (including me) needs someone to take care of them and their baby to give them the best health possible.
Make your baby’s first home the best. Make it a safe, healthy and a comfortable environment. This will promote a smooth and easy transition into their new home. See a chiropractor on a regular basis during pregnancy (and after, to have you and your baby adjusted) and you’ll never look back. It’s the best decision you can ever make.
